How badly do you want to put a little one in a pair of shortalls right now? This is Maude maudeling (ha) them for me –; and yup that dip dye hair of hers is all na-tu-ral. These DIY Shortalls are not very hard to make at all. I wanted to give them a little extra style so I went with a bubble shorts look. Not into the straps? Ditch them and you’;ve got yourself a cute pair of bubble shorts with a belt. Word on the street is that cool weather is on its way. Not. A. Problem. Tights would look adorable under these, or even a pair of knee-high socks.

DIY Shortalls?

If you are new to sewing shorts you might want to start by taking a peek at our Operation Sleep Cute: Sleep Shorts Tutorial.

Fold your fabric and lay a pair of folded shorts onto it for tracing. ?I placed the shorts in about 2″; from the fold. Cut 2 pieces and leave extra all around. You want them to be extra big for the bubble look.

Sew the shorts together. Refer to the Operation Sleep Cute: Sleep Shorts Tutorial if you are unsure how. Finish the edges with a serger,?sewing with a zig zag stitch, or cutting with pinking shears (I didn’;t do that until laterpersonalized gifts for her ideas, but I don’;t recommend it).

For the cuffs you will want to cut two strips of fabric. I went with 2×;10 inches, but you can make them larger or smaller. ?Keep in mind that the cuff should be about 2″; smaller than the leg opening on the shorts so that it can gather to have the “;bubble”; look.

Sew the ends of the cuffs closed and set aside.

Fold the top of your shorts over 1/2″; and then again 1″; and iron. down to keep in place.

Keeping the shorts flipped inside out, sew them all the way around, but make sure to leave a small gap open to thread the elastic through.

Baste stitch the leg opening and gather. If you are unsure about gathering check out our post on How to Gather Fabric.

Flip the shorts right-side-out. Match up the gathered leg opening to the cuff pieces and sew around.

Flip the cuff pieces out. This is how you get the bubble look for the shorts.

Fold the cuff pieces over a 1/2″; and then another 1″;. You can sew it down or just iron it down. I chose to just iron them down.

Cut three 1 x 2 inch pieces of fabric for the belt loops.

Fold the sides so they meet in the middle, then fold it over again.

Sew around all the edges.

Fold the ends under and sew the belt loops onto the shorts. I put two in the front and on in the back, but you can do as many as you’;d like.

Now for the elastic, cut your elastic about?2.5″ longer than the child’s waist measurement.?Thread it through the waist and sew the ends together. Stitch the opening on the shorts closed.

You’;re almost done!

I decided to make a belt for mine and used the same technique to make the shoulder straps too. I’;ll explain next…;

You will need two strips of fabric for each strap and the belt. Start by cutting the strips to 1.5″; x 25″;. I chose 25″; because that was about as long as it needed to be to fit the child. This length can be adjusted to fit your child.

Sew along the edges keeping the ends open for the belt. Sew three of the four edges closed for the shoulder straps.

Flip the strips right-side-out.

For the belt, cut the ends at a diagonal. For the straps you can just keep the open end cut straight across.

Fold the ends in for both the straps and belt. Sew closed.

For the straps –; lay the shorts out and mark where you want the straps to go. Will they criss-cross or go straight back? That’;s completely up to you.?Finish by sewing them down to the inside of the shorts.

For us, January is just as busy as December. It’s the month of birthdays! Aniston just turned two, Adalyn will be 4 next week, and well, we’re not going to talk about mine. Since it sneaks up so quickly after the holidays, I keep it simple. Just a few beautiful details and adaptations of our current decor. There are perks to having a winter birthday party! This year, I incorporated a few pieces of our Christmas decor as well as our recently transitioned January decor to create a slightly winter wonderland themed birthday party. I say slightly because I don’t like to do anything overly themed. Just a few touches to make it special. I was reminded of this when I was at Target last week and overheard a mom in the laundry aisle on her cell phone talking about how she was so overwhelmed preparing for her daughter’s birthday party and how it will never live up to Pinterest. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming or a Pinterest party. Aside from searching for the bird, I spent an hour preparing for Adalyn and Aniston’s party, and, from the look on their faces, they enjoyed every moment of it, and so did I!Adalyn had a few requests – brownie cake, marshmallow cream, chocolate ice cream and cotton candy milk. Apparently the age of 4 is when you become opinionated. She’s a party planner at heart, and I loved her excitement and anticipation.I took advantage of after Christmas sales and purchased a snowflake pan to make our own cake this year and it happened to make perfect portions! You haven’t seen a chocolate snowflake before? I dusted it with powdered sugar to give it a little snow effect and we served it with homemade marshmallow cream and chocolate ice cream. Yes, it was amazing. The girl has great taste!Hot chocolate with snowflake stirrers {also an after Christmas clearance find} and flavored milk were served along with soft drinks. That’s worth having a birthday alone! For lunch, I served bacon macaroni and cheese. If you haven’t made it yet, add it to your menu planning for next week. It’s easy, creamy and great for large groups. As I previously mentioned, I kept decor to a minimum. I scoured the yard for fallen branches to create marshmallow trees – one for the entryway and another for the side board. I love it so much in my birch vase that I’m not sure I can replace the marshmallow covered branches with the red berries again. And the bird. I confess, I went to 6 Targets, and sent my sister and a friend on a bird hunt. Maybe I gravitated to the lil guy because he has the same hat as Adalyn and Ani? I don’t know, but thankfully a friend on Facebook had mercy on me {my friends and family} and loaned him to me.If you aren’t comfortable at arranging flowers, a single stem in a bud vase always makes a statement. Just snip it a half in or so above the top of the vase for yet another quick & easy beautiful detail.Marshmallows grow on trees in my dreams! Using a mix of large and small {fresh} marshmallows, I pushed them onto the end of stems, snipping some stems down to where they were sturdier to create a “blooming” tree.I had planned to make marshmallow garland, but I was out of time and out of fishing line before Isla woke up. I made my peace with it and the girls didn’t mind at all.I asked fellow blogger and calligrapher Madi Reid Sanders?to create a Happy Birthday sign that I could frame in my kitchen vignette. It only takes one or two standout details to really make a party come alive. To allow Chris and I to relax and enjoy every moment of the party, I enlisted our neighbor and babysitter to take coats, offer drinks, serve lunch, and dessert. I wanted to visit with our family that traveled to celebrate with us and just soak in every moment with the girls. I will never again host their birthday parties without. Honestly, I’m not sure why I didn’t think of it before! It may seem frivolous, but it was the best money I have spent in a long time. For more easy entertaining ideas, follow me on?Bloglovin?and?Facebook, pin with me on?Pinterest?and go behind the scenes on?Instagram.

Ok so a bit ago I shared how I got my invitations from Wedding Paper Divas. Can I tell you how happy I am with them?!
